Memories

Our mind changes them, turns them into distorted narrations, that flatten time and space into a single moment. They are  both literal and symbolic, each incorporates what we knew and felt at some point in the past, what we think about it now, and what we feel will happen in the future. Memories are trompe l’oeil fragments, constantly revised and reinvented, from which we construct what we call our destiny.

Mirror in Mirror

30×40

Collage of paintings (acrylics on canvas)

Portraits of three generations of women in my family. They are all reflections of one another, past in present in future. Here I tried to take this metaphor more literally, merging our portraits into one.

Afternoon

18×24

Acrylics, rope, various mediums on wooden board

This piece was inpisred by a long tradition of idylic pastoral landscapes.

Empty Inside

19×13

Acrylics, photography collage, glue on paper

I wondered if I can use the symbolic language of tree branches to re-create the iconic image. I used my photography of branches that I have been collecting for years. The emptiness of the sky and chaos of branches created a suitable metaphor for the image of a celebrity: complicated but ultimately empty, a slight of hands.

Idyllium

20×16

Acrylics, wood, paper collage, photography collage, fabrics, glue on canvas

This is my take on a pastoral theme. It has a patchwork nature, which is how I believe memory operates. The carved figurines, flowers, sky, tree branches are covered with a thick layer of glue which gives it a certain “amber” quality. Like an ant stuck in amber, my idyllic world is a message from the past.

Stojanka

11×27

Photography, inks, markers, spray paints, various mediums, acrylics on canvas

This work is a further investigation of the meaning of direction. Three photos of my grandmother depict alternative life paths, the abstract “directed” lines are designed to give some sort of artistic meaning to those alternatives.

Lost and rescued

60×30

Acrylics, spray paints, plaster, glue, inks, old newspaper, photography, various mediums on canvas

This was an attempt to rescue the feeling of the past. In the center is my grandmother, who took care of me when I was a child. She is surrounded by rather abstract forms, that to me represent time and her feeling of the world.

Family Tree

21×21

Acrylics, photography, stamps, glue on cardboard

This is one of the most personal works for me. It consists of bits and pieces that I managed to save from my childhood. Here, tree branches depict time in a rather literal way. They hold images of the past: my grandmother, myself as a kid, stamps from a country that does not exist anymore.

In wonderland

48×36

Inks, acrylics, watercolors, paper collage, glue, photography, various mediums on canvas

This painting is my attempt to honestly depict an inner life of one of my close friends, who seemed to spend much of her time in a sort of alternative universe. Through this very specific goal, I was trying to tackle the idea of the other dimension, a mythical space without a protagonist, where humans often exist without being aware of it.
